The South Toms River Recreation Commission offers long-term volunteer opportunities for people interested in volunteering in the Homework Support Program as tutors, mentors, and positive role models for local students. Whether you’re exploring tutoring volunteer opportunities or looking to become a tutor, our programs help volunteers build consistent relationships that create lasting impact.
Volunteer tutors deliver the power of education to South Toms River Elementary students through weekly one to one tutoring and mentoring, providing services at no cost to families. Programs begin in October but volunteer applications are accepted on a rolling basis throughout the school year through May.

Typical Day
Every year, we work with dozens of volunteers to improve the lives of children and in South Toms River. Become a volunteer and help elementary students to realize their fullest potential. Volunteers make this program possible!
Elementary Students arrive at Recreation Complex3:45 PM

Tutoring begins October and lasts until May. If you cannot commit to the full school year of tutoring, you can request a start date any time within those dates. From your start date onward, we ask for a minimum weekly commitment of 3 hours per week.

The program is focused on helping with existing homework assignments give to students. Our program staff will help you provide support with academics and social-emotional skills and provide opportunities to engage in mentorship experiences.
Most of our volunteer tutors have no prior experience working with a student. We provide all the training, resources, and curriculum you will need to be successful.
The most important thing is that you are willing to commit to meeting consistently once you start. However, we understand that our volunteers are busy and may need to miss sessions at times, which can be communicated with our staff.
You will receive all of the support you need including training, resources, curriculum, and technology tools.
You will have access to our program staff who will provide ongoing technical assistance to make sure your weekly sessions are successful.

South Toms River Elementary School has an internal program that chooses students for the program and supplies transportation to the Recreation Complex.
